Antonio de Blockpocket nos reporta un bug que está en el plugin de Weighted Categories, el cual no muestra correctamente el link de la última categoría en el Tag Cloud. Para tal causa, ya ha creado un parche que corrige el error, el cual es simplemente cambiar la extensión del archivo a .php y sobreescribir el archivo del plugin.

Weighted Categories es un plugin recomendado para ser utilizado en conjunto con Cat2Tag.

Así que Eduardo me ha pedido que escriba lo que pienso acerca de Wordpress.com, al cual por supuesto me ha enviado una invitación, y de esa invitación ha resultado un blog estilo adolescente con granos en la cara. En lo que Eduardo seguía dando crónica del super-evento Apple, me dispuse a probar el servicio.

Les diré en un principio que hasta ahora el servicio me ha dado algunos problemas, por ejemplo, no puedo agregar nuevas categorías desde la página para crear nuevos posts, posiblemente esta funcion aún no esté habilitada o algo por el estilo.

Otra cosa fue el editor WYSIWYG, me pareció molesto así que lo deshabilité, aunque me imagino que a mucha gente le parecerá útil. Además como a Eduardo, a mi me pasó lo mismo, no hay Markdown habilitado y está algo complicado para mi tener que escribir etiquetas HTML, una y otra vez para cosas que con este plugin lo hago con una simple combinación de símbolos.

Las plantillas no se pueden editar y la gran mayoría de ellas están feas (a mi parecer), a lo mejor y con el tiempo agregan más. Tambien me gustaría que se pudiesen editar, aunque sea areas especificas como el sidebar, el post y la navegación principal, con el footer no me mortifico tanto (tal vez no les guste la idea de que un buen día quite el copyright que hay en este).

En conclusión, el servicio es bastante sencillo de utilizar, me pareció genial que hayan utilizado como base la versión 1.6 (próxima a salir) pero todavía le falta tiempo para madurar y corregir algunos errores. Posiblemente y en un futuro mejoren las características que ofrecen.

Ahora muchos preguntaran si tengo alguna invitación disponible, lo siento, pero esa invitación ya fue dada a un buen amigo que preguntó por ella.

Desde hace algunas semanas estamos siendo sindicados desde Planeta Wordpress, un reblog enfocado a todo lo relacionado a Wordpress, extraído de bitácoras en español, incluída esta, la de su servidor.

Y otro, un proyecto de Manuel M. Almeida, al que muchos conocerán por Mangas Verdes, llamado CMS Bitácoras. Este síndica todo lo relacionado con los sistemas CMS’ más populares, esta bitácora tambien está siendo sindicada en el reblog.

Por último, debo hacer un poco de hype, ya que una actualización acerca Cat2Tag está por salir en los próximos días, les adelanto que el poner tags para Technorati es un poco redundante ya que por default toma los links de las categorías de Wordpress, así que esa característica se descarta (Gracias Ozh) y que por el momento estamos arreglando el plugin para que funcione en la próxima versión a salir de este sistema, que es la 1.6 (Gracias Alf).

I’m on the initial stages for the next version of Cat2Tag, which will have some extra features and some quick fixes, but basically this is what I’m trying to accomplish for the next release:

Technorati Tags
I don’t really find them really necessary nor useful, but seeing many people are requesting this feature, it will be included in the next version, turned-off by default, i’ll later explain how it will be turned on.

Collective-Tagging
Don’t really mind the concept, in short, the plugin will let the readers tag the posts, again some may find it useful, some others don’t, so again, it will be turned-off by default. I need to research a lot more into this, and if an anonymous user can take part of this collective-tagging thing or it is neccesary to register before.

Control Panel
I think for more customization, a control panel is required, and last time I checked there’s a way to dynamically add a control panel, the point here is to make the plugin zero invasive to any Wordpress installation, with that I mean, “only one file for everything”.

Custom Separators
If you don’t like the blank spaces as a separator, you can choose any symbol but alphanumerical and international symbols like á or ñ.

Sub-Tags
Sub-Tags = Sub-Categories, the most practical way to flag a subcategory if found could be using the main tag, then write a special symbol indicating we’re going to create a sub-category (different from the separator symbol), then write the name of the new sub-category, something like this:

• You have a main category called “Cat”
• You want to have a sub-category of “Cat” called “SubCat”
• In order to have “SubCat” as a subcategory of “Cat” you will need to write on the tags field “Cat > SubCat”.

If you have better ways to make this, please post it in the comments.

And those are the main new features I plan for the next version of Cat2Tag. And again I encourage you to post your opinions, bug reports and feedback about this plugin in the comments.

Si usas Wordpress y estás aburrido del diseño de tu administrador, esta es una solución rápida y sencilla. El plugin en cuestión le da una imagen totalmente nueva a tu administrador Wordpress, con la similaridad que tiene la interfaz de Mac OS X Tiger, muy agradable por cierto.

Lo he instalado en el weblog y estoy esperando a un tiempo libre para poder modificarlo ad-hoc al sitio, tal y como estaba en el otro, y a lo mejor le pongo patrones de atiguereados para que se vea más pimp aún de lo que ya está.

Así es como se ve mi administrador de Wordpress, le puse una nueva imagen ad-hoc con el diseño del sitio en cuestión, y una que otra cosa que me molestaba y que fuimos mejorando, todo esto gracias a el CSS, no tuve que modificar ningún archivo PHP, tan solo modifique la hoja de estilos — muy flexible — e incluso el plugin de Cat2Tag se ajustó perfectamente.

I’ve made some improvements to the cat2tags plugin. Noteable, you can use spaces, the list is comma separated, and I combined the output of tags with a weighted list — looks pretty good.

Me han reportado que al accesar a esta página se ve un blog de Britney Spears apuntando al directorio /bs el cual me ha marcado un error 404 — no se encuentra la página –, si alguien más lo ve, favor de hacerlo en los comentarios… si puede, estamos trabajando para que el sitio se mantenga en línea el mayor tiempo que se pueda.

What’s exactly Cat2Tag? Well let me tell you it’s a plugin who lets you use folksonomies — you know, you have seen it in services like Flickr, del.icious and others — for your blog instead of the categories. The beauty in this one is you actually are using the categories sytem as the tags system, or in other words, it let you create new categories on-the-fly when you’re writing a new post, without actually doing any damage to the actual database structure, so it’s safe to uninstall this if you don’t like to use folksonomies, which I really doubt.

Requirements

• Wordpress 1.5 Strayhorn
• MySQL 4.0
• PHP 4.3 (Tested on 4.3.10)

Installation

Now, installation is really easy, it’s totally fool-proof, you don’t even need to modify your WordPress files or apply patches, the steps are 4:

1. Download this file and save it as .php.
2. Upload the file to your plugins folder, which in most cases is inside the wp-content folder.
3. Go to your Admin Panel, and in the Plugins section, activate it.
4. Actually, there’s no Step 4 — does it sound familiar to you? — just start writing a new post.

What this plugin does?

• Gives you the posibility to create new categories — a.k.a tags — when creating new posts, like you do when posting something on Flickr or del.icio.us.
• Shows the most popular tags with the posibility to add them to the tags field.
• Shows you all the available tags for the same thing mentioned above.
• You don’t need special keywords or additional tables to make it work, instead, it uses the categories system to organize your tags.

To do list * Technorati, del.icio.us, Flickr tags integration. * Press it bookmark compatibility. * Recognition of underscores to be considered as spaces, as well words wrapped with quotes like Flickr does. * mod_rewrite compatibility.

I’m open to more suggestions.

Other stuff

If you want to have an archives display like the Flickr popular tags, you can get the Weighted Categories plugin, thanks to Eduardo Arcos for pointing that out and saving me some work. Now to give it the Tag look, go to your permalink options and adjust the categories field to /tags.

You’re encouraged to modify this plugin at your own neccesities, but as always you give the proper credits to the author, which in this case is me, Edmundo Hidalgo.

No me gusta dar adelantos de lo que hago o lo que todavía no está terminado, pero creo que es necesario que la blogosfera lo sepa, y además, creo que se lo debo a la comunidad Wordpress, sistema que me ha funcionado de maravillas para administrar este humilde blog.

Actualmente, me encuentro con un problema al escribir mis posts, que es el de categorizarlos, muchas veces el post no entra en alguna de las categorías predefinidas lo cual me resulta molesto, porque no tengo de donde escoger, y muchas de las veces considero innecesario crear una nueva categoría. Ahora, con la aparición de servicios como el Flickr, Technorati y Del.icio.us, que en vez de utilizar un listado de categorías predefinido por el usuario, este mismo crea en el aire las categorias en las que cabe el contenido a publicar. En lo que a mi respecta, se me ha hecho de lo más sencillo para organizar contenidos en las diferentes comunidades, y de paso si no existía alguna etiqueta para los contenidos, esta se crea sin ningún problema.

El próximo 1 de abril las cosas cambiarán.

UPDATE Por cierto, el sitio ya está funcionando bajo el sistema de tags, no se preocupen, le estoy dando detalles a este plugin para que quede bonito, y sea aún mucho más fácil de utilizar, por lo mientras les puedo decir que ahora categorizar los posts se me ha hecho sencillo…
