Cat2Tag Release
Want to know what’s new about Cat2Tag Check it here
UPDATE You can opt for an alternative version of this plugin. Check the details in here.
What’s exactly Cat2Tag? Well let me tell you it’s a plugin who lets you use folksonomies — you know, you have seen it in services like Flickr, del.icious and others — for your blog instead of the categories. The beauty in this one is you actually are using the categories sytem as the tags system, or in other words, it let you create new categories on-the-fly when you’re writing a new post, without actually doing any damage to the actual database structure, so it’s safe to uninstall this if you don’t like to use folksonomies, which I really doubt.
Requirements
- Wordpress 1.5 Strayhorn
- MySQL 4.0
- PHP 4.3 (Tested on 4.3.10)
Installation
Now, installation is really easy, it’s totally fool-proof, you don’t even need to modify your WordPress files or apply patches, the steps are 4:
- Download this file and save it as
.php. - Upload the file to your plugins folder, which in most cases is inside the
wp-contentfolder. - Go to your Admin Panel, and in the Plugins section, activate it.
- Actually, there’s no Step 4 — does it sound familiar to you? — just start writing a new post.
What this plugin does?
- Gives you the posibility to create new categories — a.k.a tags — when creating new posts, like you do when posting something on Flickr or del.icio.us.
- Shows the most popular tags with the posibility to add them to the tags field.
- Shows you all the available tags for the same thing mentioned above.
- You don’t need special keywords or additional tables to make it work, instead, it uses the categories system to organize your tags.
To do list
* Technorati, del.icio.us, Flickr tags integration.
* Press it bookmark compatibility.
* Recognition of underscores to be considered as spaces, as well words wrapped with quotes like Flickr does.
* mod_rewrite compatibility.
I’m open to more suggestions.
Other stuff
If you want to have an archives display like the Flickr popular tags, you can get the Weighted Categories plugin, thanks to Eduardo Arcos for pointing that out and saving me some work. Now to give it the Tag look, go to your permalink options and adjust the categories field to /tags.
You’re encouraged to modify this plugin at your own neccesities, but as always you give the proper credits to the author, which in this case is me, Edmundo Hidalgo.
Issues, bugs, etc.
If you have any problems or there’s some bugs in the plugin, let me know in the comments.
And that’s it. Have fun!

Fixed Categories or Tags?
It’s a matter of naming conventions, really. And the question how easy it is to add new classifications to content. Supposed you’d rename every occurrence of “category” to “tag” in your WordPress install, you’d still be doing the same thing, it…

Does it work like Flickr? Where if you place quotes around two words it treats it as a single tag?
March 28th, 2005 at 11:36 am
It works like del.icio.us — separation with spaces — but I’m thinking adding that feature in a new version.

hi, edmundo. i just installed your plugin. it’s pretty easy to create new categories on the fly now (nice feature!) but i recognised that after the installation it’s not possible anymore to change the category/ies of a post…

I forgot to mention that the categories list it’s not gonna work, if you want to change the categories you need to do it in the tags input
March 29th, 2005 at 4:05 am
I like your plugin, but there is a small bug when using the Press It! popup window. The old categories list on the right is still shown.
March 29th, 2005 at 1:56 pm
Yeah, i didn’t considered that part, in fact that’s not a bug it’s just something I missed, but as soon as I can, I will add it.

Cat2Tag plug-in
Edmundo Hidalgo has written a plug-in called Cat2Tag. This is a close approximation of a plug-in that I was considering writing; one that enabled you to create categories on the fly. I’ve had a need for this several times already, and I’ve only bee…

How hard would it be to add tag intersections to this code? For instance, wordpress+plugins would list all posts tagged with both wordpress and plugins. Would it be possible to add this functionality without modification to the core wordpress code?
April 3rd, 2005 at 1:59 pm
I’m still investigating how to do it without modifying files, that’s all about this plugin. I knew from a plugin who does that but I’m still not sure if it does well.

When I tried to choose my tags when posting a post from the BOOKMARKLET, nothing happens - this is very annoying, as I always post from the bookmarklet. It may be the javascript?? Or is this my own fault?

Something is not working right on my install of cat2tag. The ‘tags’ I put in the tag box at the bottom of the message are just ignored.
No one else eems to be having this problem, so am wondering if I have a conflict with another plugin?

maybe use next css is better:(just over normal catalog box)
echo “\n#tagsinput { z-index: 2; position: absolute; top: 28%; right:6%; width: 15em; }\n”;
echo “\n#popularTags,#allTags { z-index: 2; position: absolute; top: 40%; right:5%; width: 9em; height:29em; margin: 5px; padding: 10px; border: 1px solid #ccc; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; line-height: 25px; }\n”;
